CROOKED RIVER LIGHTHOUSE
1895
State Road 98
Carrabelle, FL
The 115' skeleton tower that now sits outside the town of Carrabelle in Franklin County was built to replace the one on Dog Island destroyed by a hurricane in 1873. The fourth-order lens light began operation in October, 1895.
Carrabelle is the eastern terminus of the north Gulf coast's Intracoastal Waterway. From there to Tarpon Springs, where the waterway continues again, vessels must pass over 200 miles of open Gulf, with few protected harbors and shoals extending five to six miles out from shore.
The lighthouse is now automated.
